Magic Users
updated 11/25 witches mages myths
called many things.. witches, warlocks, mages, druids, sorcerers, necromancers and more, magic users have inhabited the earth for a long time. generally human born, some magic users are born with innate powers, and others find power within pacts with daemons or faeries. magic encompasses many fronts, from nature to fire, from water to air, from pagan ritual to spell slinging frontliner, a user's magic is tinged by the way it is bestowed upon them. daemons lend themselves to fire users, faeries to those who wish to enchant nature, and pure born magi show their inklings at a young age.

though born magic users are rare, a few do come around within a century, and typically they are destined for greatness. human made pacts that last for generations are not uncommon, and often born witches and warlocks who feel the effects of those pacts made by their ancestors are mistaken for natural-born magi, diluting the recognition of those gifted few.

depicted throughout history through various media, books, television shows, movies and more, the magic users of the world are a varied lot. some find their power in ancient tomes and study, while others are born with that little spark of fire inside them that just needs to be harnessed. others still make pacts for instant power, and some attune themselves to nature and find happiness in the earth and what it can provide.

unlike the books and movies show there are no studious colleges for a magic seeker to harness their power, instead most train underneath an already established magic user, often an older family member. it is not uncommon for generations of magic to live within families, even if they aren't natural born.

witches & warlocks

born humans who have attained power through long study of tomes, spell books and ritual, or sometimes that have gone the faster route by making a pact with a daemon or a fae. some soul selling might be requiredℒ️.

the path to learning magic is a fitful one, full of mistakes, fizzled dreams and scorched desks. many humans seek the teachings of someone already knowledgable in magic, who can guide them towards the proper channels. to study, learn and fully harness magic takes decades of work, and is not something learned over a weekend in a salt circle. this lends itself to many human-born magic users creating pacts, not understanding what they might be signing away to get those powers a little bit faster.

pagans / druids magic users who have found their powers in the deep soils of the earth, and who's magic revolves around plants, nature and animals. these generally gentle magic users find themselves most at home in forests, and cultivate beautiful gardens and green life. some fae also grant druids further powers, such as animal-shifting.

typically attuned with nature, pagan magic users and druids train to learn the secrets of creating and maintaining plant life, bending the earth around them to their will and finding particular favor in the magic of healing. typically skilled potion makers, these magic users know the benefits and drawbacks of most plants, and can concoct helpful items, salves and tinctures.

a druid looking to further their abilities might make a pact with a fae and earn the gift of animal shifting. while the entirity of the animal kingdom is open to them, the druid must have seen the animal before in person, and typically druids favor certain forms over others.

necromancers magic users who sacrifice their own life energies or the energy of an unwilling participant for the power to control the dead. able to summon ghouls to aide them, or to sometimes revive a dead person with a powerful ritual, necromancers are the black sheep of the magical community, but important at times.

to become a necromancer is to be willing to sacrifice your own life essence for the powers you wield. while very powerful and feared among the supernatural community for the work that they do, it is only those who practice these so-called black magicks who understand the true cost. giving up years at the end of your life might sound easy in theory β€” until the bill comes due. necromancers must use their own, or the energy of another life for their magicks, sacrificing small limbs (pinkie fingers, etc), minutes to years from their own life depending on the strength requirements of the spell or the full life of another creature to achieve their means.

psychics psychics are also not naturally born, having to train themselves in channeling their true calling. to become a real psychic, a human must make a pact with a fae to receive the ability to peer into dreams, to read the stars and tell a person's future. often psychics channel their power through a token, like a crystal ball or a set of tarot cards. just as with mediums, there are plenty of fake psychics in the world, the gift of the fae elusive.

mediums not naturally born, mediums are humans who have gone through extensive research and made some allowances within necromantic arts to form relationships with the spirits beyond. of course there are plenty of fakes out in the world who boast the ability to talk to ghosts, but to find a true medium is rare.

natural born mages

the only natural born magic users, exceedingly rare and generally within bloodlines that have already had mages within them. as mages mages grow and harness their natural magical abilities, they most often form some kind of attachment to a specific circle of magic. some end up with fire speciality, others with enchantment, and still more with a myriad of others.. there have been documented cases of all kinds of magicks in mages throughout the centuries.

circles of magic
While born mages are generally adept in most all kinds of magic, most find their true circle, their strongest powers and hone those to a sharpened edge. similar to types of magic as seen in the grishaverse or circle of magic, these types of magic can be vast and varied. the circles within our world include but are not limited to
fire
water
air
earth
healing
necromancy
light
glamour
enchantment
summoning
alchemy
fabricators
thread / tailoring
telepathy
we encourage you to think about what these powers mean for your character and build from there, and to avoid significant overlap with other mages. if you have an idea for another circle of magic, we are open to further suggestion!

pacts and their effects

myths

schools unfortunately the world of harry potter and the magicians is a myth and magic users are generally on their own for their training. either teaching themselves through copious study, and a hint of luck, or being exceedingly lucky to have a mentor or a family member to teach them, the journey to magic is not an easy one. not even for those born with a natural gift.

covens
familiars most magic users have the capability to summon a friendly spirit to act as a familiar for them. similar to the familiars as found in d&d (see caleb's cat, frumpkin from critical role!) these spirit companions can take any form the caster wishes, and act as extensions of the mage, witch or warlock. they share a telepathic link, and the familiar is able to aid in the casting of some spells.
